Director's Bio
My name is Gustavo Vizoso. I live in the town I was born 35 years ago, Sant Just. A small suburb of Barcelona, where the people know you and greets you by the street. My relation with the cinema began at the age of 16, when I discovered the visual language of the images. A weekend I saw Fellini's Dolce Vita with my father. I was charmed with the movie, but the end I discovered a secret that would catch the whole life, the language of the images. In that sequence, Marcelo Mastroianni remains lonely in the beach, while the people gather a few nets. I understood his loneliness, his vital situation in contrast with the vitality of the rest of the people.
The cinema started me speaking. And already it would never stop. Along the years I realized that I wanted to do cinema. The dream vanished when I found out what how hard was to do a movie. Already at the age of 18 I studied Communication's Sciences in university, and I thought that if cinema is only a dream, I wanted to continue explaining stories in images.
I began to study photo journalism. A profession that later I developed for 6 years. Thanks to photo journalism I could travel: Morocco, Portugal, Ulster, USA, and develop a career in which I had some that another prize: Prize Fujifilm, I the Reward Town hall of Barcelona.
But before working as photo reporter an experience in my life change me forever. At 22 and in the last year of University, I went to study at Lisbon. There, a lesson influenced me definitively. Course of Documentary with Jose Manuel da Costa, the director of the Portuguese Filmo, a documentary fanatic. In that course I discovered the great Frederick Wiseman. His work impressed me, to do poetry of the reality. Again the visual language catches me. Marcelo Mastroianni and the beach scene comes back, the cinema catch me again. I decide to continue with photography and to park a passion that always will be kept privately in my heart.
Eleven years later and after working as photography teacher, I decide to fulfill my great dream.
TO DO CINEMA!
Already with 34 years, some white hairs, and many bills for paying I decide to do a master degree in the school The Observatory of Barcelona. I learn the skills and the theory, and am lucky to find a teacher who exercises a great influence in my: Ricardo Iscar. The author of The Fence (prize Berlinae 2006) and Black Earth (reward Docs Lisboa 2006), teaches me to film, to being a director of documentaries. I learn from the work of Depardon, Philibert, Wiseman, and Flaherty, always Flaherty. I fall in love with the direct cinema, looking for the visual poetry in every shot.
In September, 2006 I fulfill my illusion, and go away with my sound operator David Rabinad to Tanzania. That is the born of The Mseya's, my first documentary. That dream of 16 years when I discovered the cinema with the Dolce Vita is fulfilled. I have a job that makes me happy. At present day I combine my job as videocamera operator with my personal projects, wishing to film a documentary every year. My desire is to develop the one that I consider one of the nicest jobs in the world. To film documentary cinema.
